Journaling
with Children
There is nothing more thrilling than helping
children develop a love for the written word. One of the best
ways, depending on the age of the child, to get children involved
is to help them design and construct their own journals. We
have found that older children ( 11 years of age and up) tend
to settle more easily into an adult approach to journaling.
Younger children ( 4 to 10 years of age) benefit a great deal
from using both their developing skills of writing and their
visual skills through artistic through expression. The end result
is to give our children the support and skills necessary for
a lifelong enjoyment of the written word.
Here are some
thoughts to get you started in Children's Journaling.
-
Visit a scrap book supply store and pick
up the materials you need to make a scrapbook journal
-
(this is primarily for the younger children)
-
-
Make sure you are involved with helping your children construct
their journals,
-
but let them do the majority of the work.
-
-
As your children journal, make sure to encourage them to be
as
-
creative as they can when express themselves.
A Special Project!
My children's grandparents went on an extended
vacation on the west coast and sent back a postcard a day for
my daughters! I took and copied the written part of the post
card and then we archived the postcard and the information in
a book. We added pictures that we found to support their post
card of the day, added stickers and research that we learned
from the post cards and also online. When the grandparents returned
we had a lovely journal of their adventure to give them and
the children loved learning about their trip! We even included
a map in the front of the journal to keep track of where they
were each day.
