Nature Journaling

Nature Journaling is a wonderful way to reconnect with the wild side of your writing and drawing. By being out in nature, observing, reflecting and recounting your experiences, it is easy to reconnect with a special part of your soul that might be missing. You don't need to be a fine artist, even young children of 4 years of age, produce marvelous recountings of the world around them.

You do need a good sturdy book that can trave well. We have several to offer in the Journal Shop, however, you should basically look for something that is sturdy and can provide a good "desk" for your writing and drawing! If you are going to use art pencils or watercolors for your study, be sure to look for a quality paper, something that can handle your choice of art media well. Personally, we like a spiral or ring bound book that you can flip over and keep compact. Large "book style" journals can get unweildy in the field!

Here are some thoughts to get you started in Nature Journaling.

- Work with materials that are easy to carry and work with in the field. Save fancy paint sets and easels and all for when you really get good at this!

- Remember to write down the date, time of day and where you are observing. This creates a lovely journal of your life as well as observations of nature. Write down the weather conditions, maybe a poem or quote that comes to mind, even maybe who traveled with you, or some of your deepest thoughts. This is your nature journal, it is a part of YOU. There are no hard and fast rules as to how to create one.

- Consider pressing a leaf or flower for inclusion in your work.

-Offer a "Guest" page to a journaling friend! I often swap my journal with my children, they delight to work a little magic in Mom's journal and always like what I add to theirs on a Guest Page.
